Benefits of a wind turbine for the home owner

windturbine

There are a great many benefits to installing a home wind turbine. Perhaps most obvious is the fact that you are helping the environment by not using any conventional electricity, which is produced in manners that damage the planet. Because wind turbines generate power solely from wind, you are harnessing a powerful, renewable energy source that is never going to run out. You will be saving the planet in another way too.

Wind turbines significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which helps to slow down global warming. Even a low power home system can save up to 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide! With a wind turbine you will never again be hit by increases in electricity prices, because wind is free! You can even sell some of the energy that your turbine produces back to power companies, so you are actually earning money as well as just saving it! There is no need to worry about what happens when there is no wind.

Most turbines are connected to the main power grid so you can still get electricity from there if you need it on a calm day. Turbines are designed to be long-lasting pieces of equipment and therefore have low maintenance costs and do not need to be regularly replaced. Many turbines are built to last for more than 20 years. Another benefit of this is the fact that you are making a long-term addition to your home. If you decide to move out years after first installing the turbine, the value of your home can be increased because of the “green” credentials the turbine gives the property.

Finally, the government will usually pay you a grant to help out with the installation fees for your new turbine, so you don’t even have to worry about the initial investment. Just sit back and watch your savings!

Algae power to the rescue

Javier Fernandez-Han (at only 15 years old) has created a algae-powered energy system that produces food and fuel, treats waste. He has even won $20,000 in prize money and a follow-up scholarship after winning this year’s “Invent Your World Challenge”.

Ten green things to do right now

10 green things to do at home right now
There are plenty of things you can do at home right now to help save energy and save the planet.

1) Perhaps the most obvious is to make sure you turn off any electrical equipment you are not using. Make sure they are turned off properly, with the switch at the wall socket if necessary. Did you know that if everyone turned off their TVs properly, it would save as much electricity as produced by an entire power station every year!

2) Have a shower! Instead of a bath that is. A bath can use up to 80 litres of water and a shower will use less than half of that.

3) Change your light bulbs. Energy saving bulbs are not expensive and use only a third of the energy of standard bulbs.

4) Wash your clothes by hand. Unless you have some really dirty clothes, washing them by hand will save electricity and water. You could even try washing them in cold water!

5) Make it a habit to turn off the light every time you leave the room, and especially overnight. If you have a child who is scared of the dark, find a low energy night light instead of using a standard lamp.

6) Turn up the temperature of your freezer. If you set the temperature to just below 0, everything will stay frozen and you will use a lot less energy. Eventually you could replace your freezer with an energy efficient model.

7) Recycle your plastic shopping bags. Instead of throwing them away, find a place to store them and take a few with you when you next go shopping. Instead you could take a cloth bag and avoid the need for plastic ones altogether.

8) Build a compost heap. There is no need to throw away a lot of the wasted food leftovers. Have a tub in the kitchen that you can put biodegradable waste into and make a habit of emptying it into the compost heap every night.

9) Plant your own vegetables. This might not seem like it saves energy, but consider the fact that a large amount of fruit and vegetables found in supermarkets has been flown half way across the world to get here.

10) Set up a water butt in the garden to collect rainwater. You can then use this to water your home-grown crops in the summer!

Small wind – should you buy a turbine?

We have all heard of the benefits of wind energy, but most consumers think of the large industrial wind turbines scattered around the landscape, but what of the smaller turbines on sale? Small Wind, will it be big? Can individual consumers such as the Conservative Party leader, David Cameron really make a difference to their pocket and the environment by installing a small turbine in their home?

American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has seen growth in demand for small wind technology, in here in the UK, the BWEA’s figures (May 2009) recognised the UK as the world’s biggest exporter of turbines below 50kW division.

There are a number of small turbines on offer such as the 1kW segen http://www.segen.co.uk/eng/wind/kestrel.htm, built in the UK, which can be bought and installed for less than £5,000.

The market is developing and we at smartplanet.co.uk, hope to have a review of small turbines coming soon.

Household bills to hit £4,000 a year in 2020

New research from uSwitch.com concluded that on current trends, household bills would reach £4,185 by 2020, compared to £1,243 at the moment. This figure is arrived at from taking into account inflation, but also incluing the cost of carbon cutting and environmental measures.

Councils giving away free solar heating systems

Eastbourne council are giving away solar water-heating systems. You can get free systems provided by your council, even if you’re not based in Eastbourne. This is great news, helping consumers not only save money but do their bit for their environment, good on you, EB council.
